James K. Polk Home and Museum

In the center of Columbia, Tennessee is where James K. Polk lived after graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1818 until he married Sarah Childress in 1824.

From here, the foundation for his political career began, from the Tennessee House of Representatives to governor, and finally president.

Deciding to only serve one term, Polk oversaw the largest territorial expansion in American history, acquired through a treaty with England and the Mexican-American War.

Inside the home, visitors will see family artifacts, items from his time as president, as well as information on his day-to-day life while living at the residence.
