Mortimer in Mortimer, North Carolina

Mortimer, North Carolina, was once a mill town for the Ritter Lumber Company. The town’s construction began in 1904, but a flood of Wilson Creek in 1940 ruined the town and prompted the residents to leave.

It is reported that U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt once stayed at the Lauren Inn in the town. Today, the foundations of several buildings and some machinery from the mill can be explored freely by visitors.
