St. Peter's Rock Grotto in Farmer, South Dakota

St. Peter's Rock Grotto is a beautiful, idyllic spot located in the tiny village of Farmer, South Dakota (Population: 15). It was constructed between 1926 and 1933. The grotto was built by Fr. Peter N. Scheier using natural materials, often ones he purchased on trips to the Black Hills.  

The Grotto was once surrounded by a Roman Catholic elementary school, but that institution closed in 1959. The Grotto underwent a formal restoration in 2001, and at that time it was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places.
